What types of fast do we do at Without Walls?
Although the Bible mentions all kinds of fasts, at WOW we encourage our members to do the “Daniel Fast”. For this type of fast we give up all types of meat, caffeine, sugars and bread. We also encourage any kind of extra activities that are not essential to our daily responsibilities such as social media, gaming, and other forms of entertainment.
What should I do during my fast?
Establishing a routine of daily prayer with plenty of time to seek and hear from God is utterly essential during your fast. You may want to follow a book or keep a fasting journal. We also recommend setting aside times to join with us every Wednesday during the fast at 630pm for prayer and worship.
Fasting to “tune up” your spiritual life is a really smart thing to do! Why? Because fasting is setting ourselves apart . . . and centering our lives on God. It’s not just eating differently and expecting some supernatural results. But rather, fasting helps us focus more on God and His Word and as His truth takes root in our heart, we experience the supernatural power of the Most High God. It’s a time to sanctify (set apart) one’s self in order to choose a dependence on God’s ability to provide a greater manifestation of His will and ways in your life.
“Is this not the fast that I have chosen:
To loose the bonds of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens,
To let the oppressed go free, and that you break every yoke?”
— Isaiah 58:6 —
As you follow the obedience of fasting, you are expressing a release of your own ability to sustain yourself in other vital areas of your life. A new realization of the Lord’s victorious strength can then be manifested in financial judgments, burdens that have weighed you or your circumstances down, habits and addictions, and things that have kept you back from God’s divine destiny.
What is the Daniel Fast?
The concept of a Daniel Fast originates from the first chapter of the Book of Daniel. Basically a Daniel Fast is eating only fruits and vegetables for a certain amount of time and abstaining from meat products. In the Book of Daniel, the prophet sets aside time to restrict his earthly intake so that a greater heavenly observance could be made. In Daniel 10:2–4, we find the allocation of a 21-day fast.
“In those days I, Daniel, was mourning (fasting) three full weeks.
I ate no pleasant food, no meat or wine came into my mouth,
Nor did I anoint myself at all, till three whole weeks were fulfilled.”
Basic Guidelines to Eating on a Daniel Fast
Foods to Eat
Whole Grains (Brown Rice, Oats, Barley, Legumes), Beans or Peas, Fruits & Vegetables, Seeds, Nuts, Sprouts, Liquids (Spring Water, Distilled Water, 100% All-Natural Fruit & Vegetable Juices).
Foods to Avoid
Meat, White Rice, Fried Foods, Foods Containing Preservatives or Additives, Refined Sugar & Sugar Substitutes, White Flour (i.e., all products using it), Margarine, Shortening, High Fat Products (e.g., dairy), Caffeine & Carbonated Beverages
